Putting the FUN in Funicular.

To say that we are excited to be involved in this project is an understatement. Provincetown is dear to Brian Orter and others in our studio who have personal connections to the cape. We cant say enough about it so we will leave it to the late, brilliant Anthony Bourdain:

“It was here, all the way out at the tip of Cape Cod, Provincetown, Massachusetts, where the pilgrims first landed,” Bourdain said. “And it was where I first landed. 1972, washed in a town with a headful of orange sunshine and a few friends. Provincetown, a wonderland of tolerance, longtime tradition of accepting artists, writers, the badly behaved, the gay, the different. It was paradise.”

The cornerstone for the Pilgrim Monument was set by Theodore Roosevelt in 1907. The monument was dedicated in 1910 by President William H. Taft in 1910. The structure commemorates the Pilgrim’s landing in 1620, where they spent five weeks exploring before sailing to Plymouth, Massachusetts. The tower is the tallest granite structure in the United States. The monument honors the Pilgrims while the museum celebrates Provincetown’s historic maritime past.

The Pilgrim Monument and Provincetown Museum have embarked on a project meant to connect the PMPM to Bradford Street and to the center of Provincetown. The Bradford Access Project introduces an incline elevator which will ascend from the Bas Relief Park on Bradford Street up to the Monument and Museum campus.

Providing accessibility and a deeper connection for the residents and visitors, the funicular is scheduled to open in September of 2020, which coincides with the 400th anniversary of the Mayflower voyage and landing in Provincetown.

Our lighting approach is warm, inviting, residential and Dark Sky friendly. Bradford Street is a mixture of homes and businesses, and our design will treat the lighting of the funicular as a private garden.
